Shawn stepped into the pet store. As soon as he spotted Juliet he walked right up behind her.
"Is this how you cope?" He asked.
Surprisingly she didn't jump. Just nodded.
"Do you plan on getting anymore pets? Cats, dogs, fish, anything?"
She shook her head.
"Not even a bunny?" No response.
"Well why do you come here everyday then?"
Shawn took a seat on the floor next to Juliet and stroked the sleeping kitten she was holding. A small gray one yawned and curled up into a ball in the middle of Shawn's lap. Juliet smiled.
"Now how does that not make you happy?" She asked softly.
"It does. But that doesn't explain why you won't buy one."
"You can't just replace something like that. Sure, you can buy another and you think it will fill the hole in your heart, but then it grows up, stops caring, and it dies too. Now you have two holes." She looked up sadly at Shawn. "See?"
"I see. Maybe you should buy me! I never grow up and I never leave you alone. Isn't that what you want?"
Juliet just smiled again.
"Shawn, I know you're only trying to help, but humor isn't always all it takes. But thank you."
"Any time. Would you like to do something today?"
"... I don't know. . . I-"
"Yes you do. Just say yes."
Juliet smiled, glad Shawn was always there to help. "Yes"
"This was so thoughtful of you," Juliet said as they pulled into the Cinema Vue.
"It was nothing."
"I don't think that's entirely true," she said gesturing to gus in the back seat.
"It was the motorcycle or the car and he is overly protective of his car. Shall we get some snacks?"
"Bring me back some Necco wafers."
"Sure thing Gus." Juliet said as she got out of the car.
Shawn opened his door but stopped to quickly fist-bump his best friend before following Juliet to get candy and popcorn.
When they got back gus had moved to the front seat.
"What? I figured you would rather sit in the back so you don't feel like your being watched," he explained.
"Well gus that was very thoughtful," Juliet said, "but this doesn't give shawn any permission to try anything while we're back there." She said and winked before climbing into the back.
Juliet ended up sitting on Shawn's lap so she could see better. Gus drove them home as she had fallen asleep. Shawn carried her into her house and put her to sleep in her own bed. Before leaving he kissed her cheek and left. As he shut off the light, Juliet smiled.
