Shawn Spencer and Burton Guster were sitting inside the Psych office in the middle of a heated debate over the differences between effect and affect when the phone rang.
"Psychic detective agency, Shawn Spencer speaking. I already know why your calling but go ahead and tell me anyway." Shawn spoke playfully into the phone
He was happy to hear Chief Vic's voice erupt through the other end of the phone.
"I need you guys to come down to a crime scene. Someone dumped a body practically on the doorstep of the station." She sounded distraught and distant.
Shawn noticing her tone of voice and knew she wouldn't be in the mood for jokes simply said "We''ll be there in ten minutes Chief." And hung up the phone.
"What was that about?" Gus asked while beginning to stand up.
"We got a case. Sounds big." Shawn stated trying to sound exited but failing. Something about the Chiefs voice had rattled him.
"And she hired us? officially? We're getting paid?" Gus asked.
"Gus don't be a wounded giraffe, of course we're getting paid. After all these years where's the trust?" Asked Shawn faining hurt.
The two best friends began to walk out to the blueberry, and climbed in.
"Where am I going anyway?" Asked Gus.
"The station"
"I thought we were going to a crime scene?"
"We are, someone dumped a body at the station." Shawn stated in a tired but still joyful voice.
"How the hell could someone get away with doing something like that!?" Gus spat out in disbelief.
Shawn sat quietly for a moment staring out the window but eventually said, "someone with skill, and someone with guts. I bet you anything there's gonna be more bodies."
Gus just stared at his best friend for a moment. It wasn't like Shawn to be so morbidly direct. They pulled up to the station and were immediately blinded by the flashing lights, cruisers, and not to mention the sheer number of people surrounding the yellow crime scene tape. They jumped out of the car and struggled and pushed to break through the mass of people to get to Jules and Lassie.
"Lassie! The spirits have called out to me and-"
Shawn cut off in the middle of his greeting when he saw the body. Both Shawn and Gus simply stopped moving upon seeing the corpse for the first time. It was a man about thirty to forty years old. He had brown hair, and wide unblinking green eyes. He was wearing nothing but a pair of soot stained shorts. His back and torso were covered in whip marks, burns, and knife slashes. There was barely and visible skin unaltered and Shawn was sure there was more he couldn't see yet. The marks on his body were somehow organized, Shawn couldn't explain it, there was just somehow a pattern to it all.
Shawn turned around only to find Gus puking his guts out in a bush. Gus was surrounded by three other officers who were dry heaving, willing their stomachs to puke but nothing would come out.
Shawn looked back down at the body and grimaced. No matter how hard he tried he couldn't shake the idea.
"I've seen this before." Shawn thought.
