Henry had his son figured out. He knew how to predict his behavior patterns well enough to prevent the most elaborate of his childhood schemes. He was disappointed, but seldom surprised, by Shawn's teenage antics. And, after their relationship turned antagonistic, he knew exactly which words had the most effect.
Which is why he didn't get his hopes up when Shawn appeared on his doorstep after so many years apart. He saved the article on the McCallum case, but always knowing it would be both the first and last time Shawn caught a murderer. And every time he shut the door on his son's sudden visiting spree, it was with the knowledge that letting him through that door would only make the inevitable abandonment hurt even more. Shawn wasn't here to stay.
That afternoon, it finally happened. An argument over the stupid doghouse, of all things. And Shawn gave up, like always. He knew it would happen.
So when Henry glanced out his window to see Shawn hard at work again, knee brace and all, he didn't have to think before grabbing his own hammer and heading outside. Henry was never more glad to have his son prove him wrong.
Author's Chapter Notes:
7/25/20 Prompt - Fatherhood
Picking a fav scene from the new movie would be impossible (there were too many good moments) but very high on the list for me is the apology scene between Henry and Shawn. I have a lot of issues with Henry's parenting skills, but there's no denying how much they really love each other. So it made me want to go back and look at some of the early episodes again and see just how much their relationship has grown over the years. That's why this popped into my head for the "Fatherhood" prompt. :)
