He walked in from his long day at the station and put his lunch box on the counter. His wife was starting dinner in the kitchen. He kissed her on the cheek.
"He's got a hickie on his neck," she said, smiling slightly.
Henry was shocked at her comment, "What?"
"He came home late from school today. Apparently, Ellie Ginnis is his new partner on a Social Studies project," she told him. He frowned.
"He's only fourteen," he said angrily. "I need to talk to that boy."
"Yes, you do. But I think it should be the ‘talk'," she said, using air quotes. She smiled as her husband's face paled.
"Why me?" he asked.
"You're his father. That's your job."
"But..."
"Henry, you teach him everything else. This is just a simple lesson in biology and personal safety," she said.
He sighed. "Easy for you to say," he thought and headed upstairs to change. After a quick shower, he knocked on Shawn's bedroom door.
"Come in."
"Hey bud, got a minute?" he said, trying to keep his nervousness from showing. He walked into the room.
"Oh no, who died?" Shawn asked.
"Trained him to read body language a little too well," Henry thought.
"No one died. I need to talk to you about that hickie on your neck," Henry said sternly. Shawn seemed to relax a little bit. Stern Henry was much easier to deal with than Scary Nice Henry. Then he processed what his father said and blushed slightly.
"What hickie? I told Mom that I got that when we were playing football in gym class."
"Son, I hate to break this to you, but I know that's not a bruise. It is a hickie. And if you got that in gym class, we need to have a much different talk than I planned. Sit down," Henry said as he sat on the bed and patted the area next to him. Shawn paled as he realized the conversation he was about to have with his father.
"Dad, listen, we don't need to talk about this. I learned all about it in Health class this year," Shawn said nervously.
"Shawn, sit." Shawn nodded and sat next to his dad, keeping his eyes downward.
"Shawn. You're coming to a point in your life where you're going to find girls interesting, and you're going to want to try certain things," Henry said delicately.
"Oh, please kill me now," Shawn thought.
"But the bottom line is this, you get anyone pregnant without marrying them first and I will break both your legs. You hear me?"
"Um, yeah."
"Good. Wash up for dinner," Henry said and left the room.
Henry entered the kitchen and sat at the table as his wife was setting the food down.
"How did it go?" she said.
"I think it went pretty well," he said and smiled.
The End
