Shawn sat down in his usual chair, spinning it around a couple times before stopping and facing his desk. He opened his computer and typed in his password(shules692015) and clicked on his web search window. He was finishing the last of the paperwork for a case the previous day before Gus came in.
Yes, it was completely unusual for Shawn to be at the Psych office before his buddy, but he had barely slept all night, so he decided to come in early.
The reason he couldn’t sleep; his dreams. Lately, his dreams were becoming a little more intense. Of course, he believed it was because of his powers.
Shawn shook his head. He still couldn’t believe that he actually possessed psychic powers. After getting clunked in the head about six months ago; he had gained the abilities, which were now being used to solve cases. Sure, he still had his hyper-observant skills and used them when the visions would fail, but lately, that hadn’t been happening as much.
Sighing as he typed the last word on his report, he sent the email to Juliet over at the SBPD then began researching some random 80s stuff until Gus walked in. As he clicked the keys, his head began to pound, which was a signal that he was about to receive a vision. He just sat back and let it come to him.
The next thing he knew, he was standing inside Santa Barbara General; looking at a hospital bed. In it was a young woman about 20 years old with dark brown hair. Her eyes were closed, and he could hear the heart monitor give off a steady beep. She was flat-lined.
Shawn tried to yell out, but then he remembered it was a vision. He didn’t know what it meant, but he did know it was of some sort of significance. He watched as the doctor and nurses tried CPR on the young woman. He tried to find some sort of ID, in case this was a future event that could be prevented. Unfortunately, he found nothing and suddenly he was sitting in his computer chair, seeing Gus’ hand wave in front of his face.
“Earth to Shawn,” Gus said, his voice just a little anxious.
“Sorry, Buddy. It’s one of those mornings,” Shawn said, rubbing his temple.
Gus knew immediately what that meant, “Another vision?” he asked as he sat down at his own desk. The subject of Shawn being an actual psychic was still a little bit of a sore spot between the two of them; so the pharmaceutical rep tried to avoid it whenever possible.
Shawn nodded as he reached into his desk to grab an aspirin. He got up to get a drink of water when he saw her. The girl from his vision, standing right in front of him. Shawn stopped short, surprised and a little scared.
“Whoa, there. How did you get here form Santa Barbara General?” he asked her.
“I wasn’t at Santa Barbara General today, Shawn,” Gus said, not looking up at his friend.
“No, I wasn’t talking to you, Gus. I was talking to this lady,” Shawn said. Gus looked up, curious. All he could see was Shawn and the refrigerator behind him.
“What lady?” he asked his psychic friend.
“This lady right in front of me, Gus!” Shawn exclaimed; pointing at the woman.
“Uh, Shawn, there’s no one there,” Gus said slowly.
“Gus, she’s right here! Standing right in front of me!” Shawn said.
Gus got up; walked over to Shawn and felt his forehead, “Nope, no fever,” he said.
Shawn ducked down out of Gus’ reach and sighed with aggravation, “Dude, she’s right here! How could you not see her!” he insisted.
“Shawn, there isn’t anyone there. I think you need more sleep,” Gus retorted as he headed back to his desk.
“Help me,” the young woman said to Shawn.
“Help you with what?” Shawn asked the thin air (well, to Gus it was thin air).
“Where am I? How’d I get here?” she asked.
“You’re at the offices of Psych Psychic Detective Agency. I’m Shawn Spencer, Psychic Detective. And the man over there that thinks you’re invisible is Boo Radley.”
“And he pulls out To Kill A Mockingbird,” Gus said more to himself. He was barely paying attention to Shawn.
“Am I still in Santa Barbara?” asked the woman.
“Yeah, you are,” Shawn said. He then turned to Gus, who was still reading the morning paper. Dismayed that his best friend wasn’t giving him the time of day, he turned back to the woman.
“What’s your name, young lady?” Shawn asked her.
“Melinda,” she said. Her voice sounded soft and suddenly had an echo behind it.
Gus looked up with annoyance, “Will you stop? There’s no one there, and you can’t make me believe that there is someone there.”
Shawn sighed and sat down, keeping an eye on Melinda, who was still standing in the middle of the room in a hospital gown, looking pale and confused. A few seconds later, she vanished, which made Shawn run through his own game of twenty questions. Was this real? Was Shawn really seeing a ghost? Had she died, and didn’t know it? There was one thing Shawn was certain of; whoever she was, she needed help, and he was the only person that could.
